The tradition of wedding invitations began before the invention of the printing press. Due to high illiteracy rates, simply mailing out invitations was often not enough to guarantee a guest’s attendance. Therefore, monks were commissioned to hand create wedding invitation notices. Using their skill in calligraphy, the monks would create ornate invitations that were then hand-carried to each guest. And so the tradition of paper wedding invitations and calligraphy began!
